The tools needed for accurate diagnosis

Our orthopedic experts rely on state-of-the-art imaging tools to give the most accurate diagnosis of orthopedic injuries and conditions. OrthoIndy Imaging offers X-ray (at most OrthoIndy locations), MRI, CT scans and ultrasound scans (CT and ultrasound available at OrthoIndy Hospital Main location only), as well as the only EOS Edge ultra low-dose radiation imaging in the state. (at Fishers and soon at OrthoIndy Hospital Main).

X-Ray

X-rays are commonly used to help diagnose particular problems involving bones. An X-ray sends beams of radiation that pass through the skin and underlying tissues (muscle, ligaments and tendons), when the beams meet the bone, an image is created.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, better known as an MRI, gives no exposure to radiation. MRIs are used to help more clearly review soft tissue and ligaments. OrthoIndy’s MRI features a “short bore” magnet that allows patients who are sensitive to smaller spaces to see out of the top of the tube making the patient feel less claustrophobic. The MRI machine can scan patients up to 440 lbs. The equipment enables MRIs to be performed with and without contrast. The scanner also has coils that are designed especially for orthopedic scans. Non-orthopedic scans available include:

  • Head
  • IAC
  • Sella (Pituitary)
  • Spine
  • Quiet Technology (at our South location)
  • Large Windows (at our Northwest and South locations)

EOS Edge

OrthoIndy is proud to be the first healthcare system in Indiana to offer EOSedge X-ray imaging to our pediatric and adult patients. This latest technology minimizes the amount of radiation used to create high-quality, accurate images as much as is practical. Depending on the number of scans required, it emits 50% to 85% less radiation than traditional X-rays.  The EOS Micro Dose also allows for a 98% reduction in radiation exposure. Each scan for an adult takes less than 15 seconds. It only takes 5 seconds for children. In addition, EOS technology delivers 3D imaging and more precise measurements, giving us the information our doctors need to select the best treatment options for each of our patients.

Dr. David Schwartz, a spine surgeon at OrthoIndy, has championed this technology: “OrthoIndy is the only practice in the state that has this new X-ray technology. One of my specialties is pediatric scoliosis, so this is a great solution for kids since they need X-rays every four to six months. But this option is available to adults, too, for a variety of X-ray needs.”

Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT Scan)

Computerized Axial Tomography (CT Scan or CAT Scan) is commonly used in adjunct with X-ray. CT scans use multiple X-ray beams that are projected at many angles in conjunction with computer resources to create three dimensional cross-sectional images. Our 16-slice CT can scan patients up to 400 lbs. and performs scans with and without contrast. Scans available include:

  • Head
  • Metal check-orbit
  • IAC, Sinus
  • Spine
  • Chest/Lung
  • Chest PE
  • Hi Res Chest
  • Chest Nodule
  • Abdomen
  • Pancreas
  • Kidneys
  • Hips
  • Pelvis
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Wrist
  • Knee
  • Ankle/Foot
  • CT stone protocol
