Dr. Hupfer graduated from Indiana University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, in 1980. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1984. Dr. Hupfer completed an internship in general surgery at Metropolitan Northwest Detroit Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1989. He completed fellowships in adult reconstruction at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and orthopedic trauma in Bern, Switzerland.
Dr. Hupfer is a recipient of the Indianapolis Monthly Top Doctor award. He serves as the team physician for the Indiana Pacers and is a member of the NBA Team Physicians Society. He was named the NBA Team Physician of the Year by the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association in 2018 and 2020. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
